Full scan did not find a virus. Including a rescue disc scan booting from Linux ;)
Was getting perplexed and frustrated.
The system became unresponsive the moment the username password screen came up.
Most posts pointed to a likelihood of failed driver.
The problem of all things was the BATTERY!
Apparently due to age, it was not providing enough power for the keyboard and mouse.
Also it would work if you disable the Microsoft ACPI compliant control from the Device Manager.
Best option is to replace battery.
